Automatic Operated Door Unlatched
Q: Is it acceptable per the 2012 Life Safety Code and other applicable codes and standards to have an auto operated door to a fire-rated room, such as 1-hour hazardous room, with the latching mechanism retracted during normal operation (not latched)? Then upon activation from the building’s fire alarm or fire suppression system for the area, the latching mechanism is de-energized and the door latches?
A: I can only speak from the Life Safety Code position, but yes, section 7.2.1.9.2 of the 2012 LSC does permit what you describe, upon activation of a smoke detector in close proximity to the door. But I suggest you contact your state and local authorities to determine if they have other requirements that you must meet.
